Chelsea Peterson-Salahuddin

Chelsea Peterson-Salahuddin is an Assistant Professor at the University of Michigan School of Information. Her research explores how marginalized communities—particularly Black women, femmes, and queer individuals—engage with mass and digital communication technologies to seek information, produce knowledge, and foster community. She also examines how the infrastructure of these technologies can either help dismantle or perpetuate systemic barriers to equity.
Dr. Peterson-Salahuddin's work has been featured in leading peer-reviewed journals, including Critical Studies in Media Communication, New Media & Society, Social Media + Society, Information, Communication & Society, and the Journal of the Association for Information Science and Technology. Her research has earned recognition from the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication and has been supported by funding from The Russell Sage Foundation.
Currently, she is working on a book project focused on Black feminism and popular media. Dr. Peterson-Salahuddin holds a Ph.D. and MA in Media, Technology, and Society from Northwestern University, as well as a BA in Political Science and Media Studies from Vassar College.
