Jeeyun (Sophia) Baik

Jeeyun (Sophia) Baik is an assistant professor in the Department of Communication at the University of San Diego (USD). She is a scholar of communication technology policy with expertise in data privacy and surveillance in particular. Her research explores the politics of technology governance across stakeholders and across borders.

Some of her current research projects include (1) stakeholder responses to emerging data privacy laws, (2) rights-based approaches to platform governance (e.g., civil rights, human rights), and (3) evolution of digital media’s data-driven business models such as targeted advertising. In her research, she focuses on examining the implications of the policies for marginalized communities.

Her research has appeared in various academic publications, including Telematics & Informatics, International Journal of Communication, Mobile Media & Communication, Mass Communication & Society, Sage Methods, and Information, Communication & Society.

She was a postdoctoral fellow at the Center for Long-Term Cybersecurity at UC Berkeley. She received her PhD in Communication and Master of Public Diplomacy from the Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism at the University of Southern California and her BA in International Relations from Seoul National University in South Korea.
