NEW YORK UNIVERSITY

Rachel Marie Brooks Atkins is a Provost’s Postdoctoral Fellow in the Management and Organizations Department of the NYU Stern School of Business and a research affiliate with CR+DS. Her research focuses on racial inequality in entrepreneurship, technology and innovation, organizations, and household economic outcomes. Rachel’s current work centers on the entrepreneurial activity of blacks in the US with a particular interest in how black firm owners utilize technology and engage in innovative activity. Her dissertation, Black Entrepreneurship and the Business Cycle: Firm Entry and Outcomes During Economic Downturn, examined how black-white disparities in entrepreneurship changed over the last two business cycles and evaluated the role of labor and housing markets in explaining those changes. In the fall of 2020, Rachel and CR+DS founder Charlton McIllwain were awarded the Kauffman Foundation Knowledge Challenge Grant to establish the Workshop on Racial Equity in Technology Entrepreneurship. This 4-year initiative will be housed at the CR+DS and aims to increase the volume of scholarship on issues of racial equity in tech entrepreneurship and support scholars of color pursuing research on this topic.
